1970s - 1980S
Stephen gives up his teaching position at Bard to devote more time to painting. The Paces buy a farmhouse - the Captain Al Shephard House - in Stonington Maine. They begin spending much of their time in Maine, usually from May until November. His work increasingly pays homage to the physical laborer, whether it’s the Maine clam digger working the mudflats or the Indiana farmer tilling the soil. This harks back to many of his earlier memories as a child working on farms in the midwest.
